I’d been resisting it for so long, telling myself there was another way. But the feeling of hopelessness was growing ever stronger. I knew I needed to do something to regulate my nervous system and go from hopeless to hopeful.

So I took a part time job and it helped soothe my nervous system. It took the pressure off and gave me the ability to focus on the next step in my business. Helping me to shift my focus from one of scarcity back into abundance.

In today’s blog, I’m sharing with you how I went from feeling hopeless to hopeful in my business. You’ll receive inspiring and practical support.

Shift your focus

You may have heard the phrase ‘what you focus on persists?’. Well, it’s true! We have a small bundle of nerves in the back of our brain stem called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). Which works a bit like the GPS in your car.

Are you focusing on everything you don’t want, i.e all the fear, self-doubt and negative beliefs. If so, that’s what you’re going to feel and experience more of in your life.

To shift from feeling hopeless to hopeful it’s really important to have self-awareness around your thoughts. What are you focusing your time or energy on? Is what you’re focusing on going to lift you up or pull you down?

Imagine if you’re spending 2 hours a day focusing on all the hopeless feelings. That’s approximately 14 hours a week, 60 hours a month and 720 hours a year! Looking at the bigger picture you’re spending one month a year focusing time and energy on what you don’t want.

My challenge to you is to identify 5 things you’re focusing on that’s causing you to feel hopeless. Then shift your focus to what you do desire. For example, shift your focus from a lack of clients to being fully booked. You can even throw my favourite 5 minute meditation in there to set yourself up for real success.

Perception vs reality

The way we speak to ourselves and what we believe to be true affects our confidence and self-belief.

When we lack self-belief and fall into feelings of hopelessness it’s due to our perception of ourselves and our abilities. This is backed by our negative self-talk, which we play on repeat like an outdated computer program. How you feel affects how you act and how you act affects the outcomes you create in your life. Business is 80% mindset 20% strategy and starts with your negative self-talk.

Here’s what you can do to support yourself in going from hopeless to hopeful in your business. Identify 5 or your common limiting beliefs and ask yourself if they are perception or reality. What evidence do you have to support your beliefs? Is this really true or is it just your perception of what you believe to be true? If it’s true what action could you take to shift out of these feelings and get the results you desire?

Regulating your nervous system

When you are in a state of hopelessness and full of self-doubt, you can fall into patterns of self-sabotage. Including going into overthinking, analysis paralysis and overwhelm, etc. This can activate your nervous system and put you into fight and flight. This means your body is on high alert for danger and will prioritise what it needs for immediate survival.

You may experience an increased heart rate, rapid breathing and tense muscles. All signs that you’re in a stress phase. This makes it pretty hard for you to focus on growing your business. Paying attention to these subtle changes in your physiology is key, so you can go from hopeless to hopeful.
